Your union is holding its October Vacancy Elections to fill vacant Executive Board and Joint Council positions. The election will take place on Oct. 14-15, 2019. Please read on for information about the election and instructions on how to accept the nomination if you are interested in running for one of these positions.

The term for these offices is from the time the election is certified until the Local’s next Biennial election, which is scheduled for May 2021.

TIMELINE

  • Deadline to accept nomination: Monday, September 30, 2019, 5:00pm (PST)
  • Candidate statements (optional) due: Sunday, October 6, 2019, 5:00pm (PST)
  • Voting (if there are contested positions): Monday, October 14, 2019, and Tuesday, October 15, 2019, 10am-6pm (PST)
  • Vote Count (if there are contested positions): Saturday, October 19, 2019, and Sunday, October 20, 2019
  • Run-off election (if necessary): Tuesday, October 29, 2019, 10am-6pm (PST)
  • QUALIFICATIONSFor Executive Board: All UAW Local 2865 members in continuous good standing for one (1) year prior to accepting nominations are automatically nominated for these positions; for the Northern Vice President position, the nominee must additionally be a member from Berkeley, Santa Cruz, Merced, or Davis; for the Southern Vice President position, the nominee must additionally be a member from San Diego, Irvine, Los Angeles, Riverside, or Santa Barbara.
  • For Head Steward, Unit Chair, and Campus Recording Secretary: All UAW Local 2865 members in continuous good standing for ninety (90) days prior to accepting nominations are automatically nominated for these positions.
  • International Convention Delegate: UAW 2865 is a local union within the UAW International union. Every four years there is a UAW Constitutional Convention where union members from different employment sectors come together, vote on policies and resolutions, and elect the UAW International Executive Board. The last Constitutional Convention was held in June 2018, and we will be holding vacancy elections, should there be interim conventions. All delegates must have been officially a UAW member for a year. Delegates must be able to be physically present at Convention meetings, which may require significant travel. For reference, the last conventions were in Detroit, MI and Kansas City, MO.
  • Concurrently held positions: Members may not hold more than one position on the Executive Board or Joint Council at a time.

ACCEPTING NOMINATION

Each member who wishes to accept nomination must indicate this intention in writing. Please only accept the nomination if you intend to run for the position, as nomination acceptances cannot be withdrawn once the nominating period has closed. Accept your nomination by email, fax, mail, or hand delivery. Email your acceptance of nomination to elections@uaw2865.org, or fax to (510) 549-2514.

WHEN ACCEPTING NOMINATION, PLEASE INCLUDE

  1. Position to which you are accepting the nomination
  2. Your name as you’d like it to appear on the ballot
  3. Contact information: department, phone number, and non-UC email address
  4. Candidate statement (up to 500 words, optional) – In the case of a contested election, the statement will be posted on the Local’s website and at applicable campus offices no later than Monday, October 7, 2019, and will be available at polling sites during the election.

JOINT COUNCIL / STATEWIDE MEMBERSHIP MEETING

UAW 2865’s quarterly Joint Council meeting and Statewide Membership Meeting will be held on October 26th on the Berkeley campus from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Union officers, including those elected in the October vacancy elections, will make decisions and discuss priorities for the academic year ahead. All UAW 2865 members are invited to attend.
