Union membership is a vote in favor of a better life.
All the contractual rights UC student-workers have secured in the last 20 years are the direct result of TAs, Tutors, and Readers making the choice to become dues-paying members of UAW 2865.
As of February 2023, Student Researchers are now eligible to join UAW 2865, too.

- Protection from workplace harassment and discrimination

- Expanded family benefits

Dues:
Union dues are 1.44% of your monthly pay and are deducted automatically. New members also pay a one-time initiation fee of $10. Dues are only deducted when you’re working as a Graduate Student Researcher, TA, Tutor, or Reader—union members pay nothing when they are on first year or dissertation year fellowship, doing work-study jobs, or working outside of the UC system.
Membership Eligibility and Benefits:
All University of California graduate students on every campus are eligible for membership in UAW 2865. Undergraduates are eligible to join when working as a TA, Tutor, or Reader. Membership entitles you to vote in union elections, including votes on whether to ratify the contract you work under.
