UAW 2865, UAW 5810, and Student Researchers United-UAW are teaming up to demand an end to rent burden for academic workers in the UC system. A recent survey found that over 90% of ASEs are rent burdened!* Members face a crisis of unaffordable housing which forces us to live in cramped apartments, commute long distances, and live paycheck to paycheck. There is currently no rent control in University Housing and UC unilaterally decides rental rates and housing conditions. But academic workers can change this through collective action that strengthens our hand at the bargaining table.
For the first time ever, nearly 50,000 academic workers within four UAW units will be bargaining at the same time. This gives academic workers unprecedented power, but only by demonstrating that a majority of us are united and committed to winning a strong contract.
This February, let’s show UC that workers on every campus are fed up with rent burden!
*Survey included 11% of in-unit workers. Rent burden is defined as spending more than 30% of your income on rent.
